Multiple deaths and injuries in shooting at Virginia Walmart – NBC10 Philadelphia > Virginia

Police in Chesapeake, Virginia responded to an active shooting situation at a Walmart that has left multiple deaths and injuries, local police said Tuesday night.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Walmart at Sam’s Circle around 10:15 p.m. and as soon as they arrived they found evidence of a shooting, Chesapeake Police Spokesman Leo Kosinski said in a news conference.

Kosinski said they believe fewer than 10 people died. The lone shooter is also dead. Kosinski added that the injured were taken to several nearby hospitals.

Mike Kafka, a spokesman for Sentara Healthcare, told NBC affiliate WAVY-TV that five patients are being treated at Norfolk General Hospital, the area’s top trauma center. Your terms were not immediately available.

Authorities said the Walmart was open to the public at the time.

After the shooting, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va) tweeted Wednesday morning that he was “disgusted by reports of another mass shooting, this time at a Chesapeake Walmart.” State Senator Louise Lucas echoed Warner’s sentiment, tweeting that she was “absolutely heartbroken that America’s recent mass shooting took place at a Walmart in my district.”

Walmart’s official Twitter account also released a statement Wednesday morning: “We are shocked by this tragic event at our Chesapeake, Virginia facility. We pray for those affected, the community and our employees. We work closely with law enforcement and are focused on supporting our employees.”

The Virginia shooting came three days after a gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five people and wounding 17. This shooter was arrested after guests at the club attacked and hit the shooter. The shootings come as the country was rocked by the deaths of 21 in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Both the ATF and the FBI are cooperating with the Chesapeake Police Department in the investigation.

Chesapeake is about seven miles south of Norfolk.
