Wisconsin and Ohio State are named Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Year

ROSEMONT, ILL. (11/23/2022) – Wisconsin Redshirt Junior jackson sharp and Ohio State Juniors Addie Engel were selected as the 2022 Big Ten Conference Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year by a vote of Big Ten coaches, the conference announced Wednesday.

Sharp is the second Badger to win the Postseason Award, after Morgan McDonald in 2018. A native of Wentworth Falls, Australia, Sharp finished 16thth at last weekend’s NCAA Championships (29:16.8), becoming the only runner from Wisconsin to finish in the top 25. His performance helped the Badgers finish sixth in the team standings. Sharp also finished second in the Big Ten Championships (23:49.0).

Sharp, who received an All-America honor at the NCAA championships this season as well as All-Region honors and first-team All-Big Ten honors, is studying psychology and neurobiology in Wisconsin. He now turns his attention to the indoor track season where he finished third in the NCAA Championships in the DMR.

Engel is the first Ohio State student athlete to unanimously receive the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year award this season.

Originally from Springfield, Ohio, Engel is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection who earned the Cross Country (2021) All-Big Ten and First-Team All-Great Lakes Region honors and is a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete honoree received cross-country (2021) and athletics (2022).

Engel finished 10th at the NCAA Championships last weekendth (19:50.4), the only horse chestnut to finish in the top 10. Her performance led Ohio State to a 15th place finishth-Finish place as a team. Engel also took first place at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, coming in at 8:00 p.m., just 0.04 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Engel’s junior season brought many accolades, including three Big Ten Athlete of the Week awards, a USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award, and a top five finisher finisher in eight of their last 11 encounters.

Wednesday’s announcement concludes the Big Ten’s 2022 cross-country season.
