Operated by the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) in Massachusetts, SNAP helps low-income households expand their grocery budgets by sending monthly benefits through the Massachusetts EBT card. Like most states, Massachusetts maintains a set monthly schedule for when SNAP recipients will receive their benefits, including December.

Massachusetts EBT cards can be swiped at card reader terminals at authorized locations with the Quest logo found on the store’s door or window. If a Quest-branded store doesn’t have a working EBT machine, the seller can issue a coupon for SNAP purchases and then call the agency to see if you have enough perks to buy the food. After that you need to sign and keep the voucher to deduct the amount from your balance. Note that it may take a few days for changes to be reflected in your SNAP account.

You can buy the following groceries with the EBT card:

  • fruits and vegetables

  • meat, poultry and fish

  • Dairy products

  • bread and muesli

  • snacks and non-alcoholic beverages

  • Seeds and plants that produce food for the home.

Items you cannot purchase with SNAP benefits include alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vitamins, medicines, dietary supplements, live animals, pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products, and cosmetics. Also, in Massachusetts, you can’t use SNAP to purchase groceries that are served hot at the point of sale.

How to get EBT rebates

Massachusetts also offers a wide range of benefits and services to SNAP customers, including the following:

  • Amazon Prime: Massachusetts SNAP recipients can sign up for an Amazon Prime EBT rebate for $6.99 per month, which is about half the regular cost of a subscription.

  • Farmers Markets: Either $40, $60 or $80 per month will be credited back to your EBT card when you use SNAP to purchase local products through the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP).

  • Museums/zoos/aquariums: Massachusetts’ Museums for All initiative grants EBT cardholders free or discounted admission to hundreds of museums, aquariums and zoos across the country. The Commonwealth also offers additional discounts at museums and cultural venues through the EBT Card to Culture Program, which will also accept P-EBT cards through 2022.

  • utility bills: National Grid’s Low Income Discount Rate is available to Massachusetts SNAP recipients.

You can verify your eligibility for Massachusetts SNAP benefits instantly by completing the online screener. Thereafter, you may apply in a variety of ways, including completing the online application through DTA Connect, applying by phone at 877-382-2363, or sending your application by fax, mail, or in person to your local DTA office.
