Despite the wind and cold, deer are harvesting in the first half of Illinois’ firearm deer season < Illinois

Considering the wind and cold for much of the three days of the first part of Illinois’ firearms deer season, I’m surprised the harvest was higher compared to last year.

Here’s the word from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources:

Hunters kill more than 52,000 deer during first weekend of Illinois gun season

SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois took a provisional total of 52,354 deer during the first weekend of Illinois gun deer season, Nov. 18-20.

In comparison, hunters captured 48,964 deer during the first Firearms Weekend in 2021.

Illinois’ seven-day gun deer season ends December 1-4. Other deer hunting opportunities in the coming weeks include:

• Deer season for muzzleloaders only from December 9th to 11th

• Late Winter Season for Antlered Deer and Chronic Wasting Disease (select counties only) Dec. 29-Jan. 1 and 13-15 January

• Archery stag season runs through January 15th. (Note: Archery stag hunting is closed December 1-4 in counties open for firearm stag season.)

Below is a table showing preliminary Illinois firearms deer total harvests by county for the first weekend of the 2022 season and comparable totals for 2020 and 2021.
