East Idaho BMX opens indoor track in Bingham County

PINGREE, Idaho (KIFI) – It has been nearly 30 years since Bingham County has hosted a BMX track. Now the sport is returning to the region due to the efforts of East Idaho BMX. They are opening a new indoor track that will be in a central location for all riders in East and Southeast Idaho.

The indoor track is located in Pingree, and East Idaho BMX President Derek Smith says finding a location for the track was a pretty quick process.

“About a little over a month since we got it and zoned it. And it was just a listing that popped up. And you know, luckily we had the opportunity to pull it off and make it happen. It was a pretty sweet experience,” Smith said.

When the track is built and ready to go, anticipation is high for BMX riders in the area.

“Of course, on a scale of one to excited in an 11, that’s just astronomical. We’ve had to pull a lot of things together for this to happen and we’re just trying to capitalize on this opportunity,” said East Idaho BMX Vice President Ben Voyles.

According to Voyles, the track offers a unique experience for every BMX rider in the area.

“The track is based on what we call you in you and it works really well for tight spaces like here in some kind of arena. Sorry, and so a guy named Lance Maguire came out and build the track and help us. He’s been doing it for 15 years with USA, BMX and we have a really top class track here, true elite. He built, he built tracks for the Olympics and so on and so forth. So what we’ve really set here is certainly really the benchmark.”

The track hopes to fill a need within the community.

“If you live in the Idaho area, about six months out of the year, you have some type of weather that isn’t necessarily outside weather. And so it really helps people to have year-round experiences on the bike,” Voyles said.

“And so it’s pretty sweet for the community. It’s pretty sweet for families to have a place to go and have a good time in the winter without having the snow,” Smith added.

The grand opening of the track will take place on Saturday 26th November. However, races will already take place on Tuesday evening.

“Here we can solve any problems and make sure everything works the way we need it to,” said Voyles.

“As you can see, we have a beautiful track and we are really looking forward to it. We don’t have our new gate yet. It will be here in the next few weeks, but it will be lots of fun. and I mean we’re excited that the folks we’ve had from are getting people from all over to reach us and ride,” added Smith.

Smith and Voyles say they also hope to bring an outdoor track to Pocatello in the near future. with the hope of having it ready in the spring.

The track is located at 1532 W 800 S Pingree Idaho. Registration for Tuesday’s races opens at 6:30 p.m. More information can be found here.
