UConn Alumni Open First Kombucha Brewery in Southeast CT

Before this year, David Brannan didn’t even know what turmeric tasted like. But now the head brewer of Mystic-based 860Kombucha said it’s one of his favorite ingredients.

“I was on that Taste of Autumn kick,” he said. “These are turmeric, apple cider and ginger. It’s just that good.”

Brannan, a Navy veteran, opened 860Kombucha in July with his adult children, Mike and Ashley. Just before 860Kombucha embarked on a Thanksgiving trip to visit his children, 860Kombucha received a shipment of new equipment needed to double its production capacity and keep up with demand.

“There’s a market out there, so now we’re just managing how fast we’re growing and how we’re scaling,” said David Brannan. “We ensure that we offer our customers quality service and have the capacity to supply and produce all the different flavors in the coming year. After four months I didn’t expect to double our production.”
