Police are investigating cats found dead in Connecticut neighborhood

WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) — Cats have been found dead in a Waterbury neighborhood and advocates say it’s clear they’ve been beaten.

Eyewitness News spoke to a woman caring for one of the victim cats.

“I’m about to start crying,” Lisa Syr said.

Lisa has been taking care of this cat, Robin, for weeks.

He was found with a broken jaw in Waterbury’s Town Plot area.

“It’s hard, it’s really hard, to see the pain and the trauma and everything he’s been through. He’s being taken care of very well,” said Lisa.

Lisa was made aware of Robin because of her work with the Connecticut Cat Assistance Team.

They focus on helping stray and feral cats.

Robin has already had surgery and expects to need more help soon.

“Once the spacers come out, he can open and close his mouth just fine and groom himself and eat. His jaw, they told me, will never be normal again, but he’ll be able to do it all,” Lisa said.

Shortly after learning about Robin, Lisa found out about other cats who were found beaten in Town Plot and the nearby neighborhood of Brooklyn.

They were all similar beatings and she believes someone is behind it.

“It was heartbreaking,” Lisa said.

Eyewitness News met her just days after learning about this cat.

We blurred the image because of its graphic nature.

“Very cruel, his head was… very like someone had crushed his head,” Lisa said.

Lisa soon attracted the attention of animal welfare groups across the state.

Desmond’s army also believes someone is responsible.

“The multitude of cats found and the manner in which they are found seems to have been beaten. it all seems like a vicious, brutal way of hitting,” said Zilla Cannamela, co-founder of Desmond’s Army.

The police are investigating Robin’s case.

So far it is the only one reported to the police.

Lisa said any suspicion of animal cruelty must be reported.

“Check with someone, but it needs to be reported every time this happens,” Lisa said.
