COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — David Savard got the go-ahead against his former team early in the third period, sending the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 past the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night for their second comeback win in three games .

Arber Xhekaj and Sean Monahan also scored for the Canadiens in the third period after the first two halves were scoreless. Sam Montembeault made 29 saves as Montreal avenged an away loss to Columbus six days earlier.

“I’m happy with the attitude we had tonight,” said Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis. “(We) simplified it a bit, played a smart street game and didn’t hit each other early and got through the first five or six minutes. Because I feel like the last two or three games have gotten us behind the 8-ball.

Mathieu Olivier scored for the Blue Jackets and Joonas Korpisalo stopped 26 shots in his second straight loss. Columbus dropped two out of three, both at home.

The game was practically even for two periods before Olivier intercepted a weak clearance pass from the Canadiens and struck from the right circle after 1:08 of the third.

Xhekaj equalized 1:30 later when his shot from the blue line went past a shielded Korpisalo.

“I pick my spot and the puck goes in,” Xhekaj said. “It feels good.”

Savard made it 2-1 at 3:35 by burying a feed from Kirby Dach from the rush for his first goal of the season.

“They pulled off two good jumps — one ran up a racquet, one jumped off a skate,” said Blue Jackets coach Brad Larsen. “We’re a little behind. It was a pretty solid game throughout. It’s too bad because we’re playing a damn good game. We haven’t given up much at all. We’ve had a few good looks ourselves.”

Monahan added an empty net at 18:07.
