Four injured starters from Alabama practice before the Iron Bowl

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Four starters from Alabama either missed last weekend’s game against Austin Peay with injuries or left the matchup with a setback. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tight end Cameron Latu and offensive tackle Tyler Steen are all dealing with twisted ankles, while cornerback Eli Ricks was on record with a concussion after the Week 11 Ole Miss game.

After Wednesday’s Iron Bowl practice, head coach Nick Saban shared updates on all four.

“They all practiced,” said Saban.

Both Gibbs and Ricks sustained their respective injuries in last week’s win at Ole Miss and weren’t surprise scratches for Saturday’s penultimate home game. Latu wasn’t eliminated from the Week 11 road win, however, but his absence created chances for some younger tight ends like Robbie Ouzts, who caught an 11-yard pass, and rookies Amari Niblack and Danny Lewis.

Steen was the only player to suffer an injury last Saturday and his absence meant Amari Kight spent most of the second half at left tackle. Freshman Elijah Pritchett also earned his first collegiate reps there late in the fourth quarter, but Kight helped maintain a strong day on the ground (263 yards on 45 attempts) for the Crimson Tide.

In addition to the players mentioned by Saban, center Darrian Dalcourt was also out of uniform. He has dealt with back spasms throughout the season. Cornerback Khyree Jackson has not been sighted for the second week in a row. Linebackers Demouy Kennedy (knee), Kendrick Blackshire (wrist) and Keanu Koht also wore street clothes. Koht wore a hiking boot on his left foot.

Later on his weekly radio show, Saban was again asked about the status of injured players.

“Most of the players trained this week — Gibbs, Steen, Eli Ricks,” Saban said. “The boys are training out there so I don’t even think about whether they played last week or not, we’re just getting ready to kick things off this week. We have a few guys that are still on the shelf but for the most part all the guys that we just mentioned are back in training and I think able to play.”

Alabama will wrap up the regular season against rival Auburn on Saturday, November 26 at 2:30 pm CT.
